Google Plus for Business – A Must for Any Company on the Web

google+circlesGoogle Plus for Business Beyond Social a Must for Any Business

When Google has launched its new social media platform, everybody thought that this was going to be just another attempt to battle with Facebook and Twitter. Now after a few years since the launch in 2011, every business realizes that Google+ is not just another Facebook, it is way more than that, and not being on Google+ means self sabotage.

Google+ as A Content and Author Confidence Rating Platform

There is a lot happening behind the scenes, that Google won’t disclose, but SEO experts have analyzed all of the patents submitted by Google, and found a lot about their long term plans. They are planning to use their social networking platform not only for content rating, and for getting trust signals, they are also getting indicators of the authority of a web writer or a business. Google+ is a way to identify authors on the WEB, to rate and rank them, and a way to enhance the other online properties with this social layer. In fact, a Google+ profile and business page is a way to increase your website’s ranking, your website’s credibility, and a way to interlink various of your web properties, such as YouTube, website, a business page on Google, etc…

Google+ as A Content Rating and Ranking Platform

Google Plus is also a content rating platform, and this works like any other social media signals. The more vote for a content piece, the better the rankings in SERP. This is a very simplistic way to explain it, but in reality things are more complex. The number of plus ones will give a certain signal to Google, but as Matt Cutts explained, it is just a little piece of the puzzle, and social signals need to confirm every year to be taken in consideration.

Matt Cutts explained that Google’s attempts to use Twitter and Facebook signals were blocked, so they eventually stopped using these signals. However, plus ones will never be blocked, so it will always be a measurable parameter in rankings.

Furthermore, the resharing is probably the most rewarding outcome on Google Plus. A reshare is equivalent with a link to the content shared. Very simple to measure. More reshares, more backlinks.

What is very interesting, is that content liked and reshared will be pushed up in SERP for anyone in the circles involved. So Google+ authority extends onto Google’s search engine. If you get a plus one, or even better a reshare from an authority, someone with one million followers, your content will be displayed higher in SERP for that million followers. From that million followers, all the people who engaged with your post will push further your content to their followers. This is probably one of the best ways to market your content.

Google Plus Authorship and Publisher Tags

Google apparently already started to use its social media platform to get important signals about web content. Obviously, this is still a work in progress, and not all content can be rated on Google +, but most content can be rated. Besides the content quality rating role, Google + also serves as a confidence rating platform. Google authorship, implemented through rel=”author, is one of the ways Google gets its trust signals. The publisher tag is another important trust signal, and ownership verification, and this is specifically meant for businesses. It can complement the authorship tag, and it is regarded as ownership of the web content. If the publisher tag is present, it is assumed that the content belongs to a commercial entity, a business, and the author wrote that piece for the company.

Social Ads – The New Way to Advertise

Maybe it’s worth mentioning here that the advertising giant plans to implement a new way to advertise, and we can call this social advertising. No, don’t even try to compare to what Facebook does with their advertising. In fact Facebook’s advertising is far from what Google plans to do. The way this will work is by pushing ads through social authorities. Social authorities can push ads to their followers, or just ignore them. A poorly conceived advertising will not be pushed by anyone who respects their followers, so there will be a natural selection. If you look at the way Facebook advertises now, it’s just the opposite; they push any ad that brings some money. On the other hand, on Google+ good ads will look like regular content, and users will not be able to distinguish between regular posts and paid ones. Although this looks like something big businesses with serious PR budgets will benefit from, it is also a big opportunity for small businesses.

In conclusion, if you are not already on Google+ you have to be, the game is changing, and the sooner you get your Google+ business page setup, the better for your website.
For a technical person, with some social media experience, this page is a quick start to set up your Google Plus for a Business.

Google Plus for Small Businesses – Promote your Online Content

The New Social Network – Google

Social media is not a new trend in promoting online content. Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, and more recently Facebook and Twitter are used for quite some time by companies and writers to promote content. Search engines used to love social media to rank web content, and they are still relying on social media to get signals, but the importance of these signals is not what it used to be. This however doesn’t mean that social media is dead for content promotion, it means that you can’t just write a page and then manipulate social media to get your page ranked. If your content is good, promoting it with social media will bump it up, if the content is poor, social media won’t help it.

Why Is Google+ Better than Facebook and Twitter?

This is probably hard to swallow for many authors, social media enthusiasts, and Internet enthusiasts, but Google+ is better than Facebook, as a social media platform, and it will be better as an traffic generating tool. Note the future tense, but I’ll get there soon.

Why it is the best social media platform?

There are a few technical and aesthetic reasons that make Google Plus a better social networking platform, not only for marketing experts, but for people who use it to keep in contact with friends and family.

  • It features a video conferencing module with ten full participants, and unlimited watch and listen.
  • The post size limit is 100,000 characters, the best among social network platforms.
  • Extremely flexible post visibility, public, only certain groups, or all groups; Facebook determines who sees your posts.
  • Great for posting photos, very close to Pinterest.
  • At the moment, Google+ is not flooded with ads, as Facebook is, though I suspect this to change in the future.
  • I always make spelling mistakes, and I notice them hours or days later, I hate that I can’t edit them. On Google+ you can edit your post at any time.
  • Google doesn’t ask you if you know the person outside of Google+.
  • It has a clean, uncluttered feel. This is somewhat subjective, but I do love it…
  • The hangouts are just great, and their features go beyond the Facebook’s video call.
  • The photo sharing on Google+ is just slightly better than Facebook’s application.
  • The great feature of G+ are the circles. The circles allow you to place your friends into separate logical containers, and when you share that picture, that shouldn’t have been taken in the first place, you can share it with your close circle of friends only. The great thing is that the platform doesn’t even allow you to publicly re-share someone else’s photo, if the photo was shared privately. Cool.

Why Is It a Great Platform for Promoting your Content?

  • Google+ is owned by Google, and they badly want their own successful social media platform.
  • It doesn’t target family, and friends only, it is a platform were you can have thousands, or millions of online friends and followers, if you are an authority, but keep close with your family too. There are virtually no restrictions, apart from some antispam rules.
  • You can group your friends and audience by interests, if you want, and have the time for it. If you only have one niche, you can choose your friends accordingly, and most likely you audience will be constituted from people who share your ideas.
  • If a piece of content has the traits to become viral, it most likely become viral on Google+, unlike on other platforms.
  • Share your content to different audiences, depending on the niche. Circles will help you do that.
  • Share content publicly, or to certain circles.

How To Start with Google Plus

If you already have a Google+ account and actively using it, you can skip the first two steps, as they are meant to help new users.

  1. You just need a Google account, and most people have one. Go to https://plus.google.com and sign in with your existing account, you do have a Gmail account don’t you? If you don’t have one you will be offered to create one. When you sign in with your existing account, you are being offered to upgrade your account, and create a public profile. Once you have confirmed your name, gender, and date of birth, you are in, you have now a Google+ account. Isn’t that simple? You are also suggested to add or change your photo, this is very important, as this is the way people connect with you.
  2. Now that you have an account, you are being offered to add people, and you are suggested a number of personalities, and Internet authorities. Add a few of them, which are more interesting for you, but don’t spend too much time on this, you can always do it later.
  3. Personalize your profile by adding a picture of you, if you haven’t done so at the account creation. Nothing says more on your profile than a picture. If your self-consciousness doesn’t allow you to post a picture of you, or you don’t want your friends to know you are writing on Internet, be creative, but just include a picture.
  4. Go to the “About” tab and personalize it. Make an objective of filling in all the boxes in the profile as this creates more credibility. If some of the information cannot be made public, adjust the settings so only certain groups can view it, or better off, include only information that can be viewed publicly. The same goes here, be creative, if the about you info needs to be kept private. You can write under a pen name.
  5. The “Story” box is where you tell people about you. Write something meaningful, interesting, so people can relate to you.
  6. The links box in your profile is very important, as it is used by Google for their authorship program. Make sure you list here any blogs that you own, and link back to your Google+ profile, from those blogs. Include other social media profiles such as Facebook, Twitter, etc…
  7. In the “People” box, make sure you set your circles as public, and the people who have you in circles as public. This allows the authorship snippet to show how many people have you in circles, and allows your followers connect with other of your followers, and see which other friends you have in common. It is a great way to get more followers. (See the picture above.)
  8. Start circling people with similar interests as yours, and authorities.
  9. Start to +1 interesting posts, commenting, and re-sharing. Share your own, or curated content too, it could be an image, a “tweet”, an interesting link, a video, or an event.

That’s all, you are now a Google+ user.

Why Is Google+ a Great Content Promotion Tool

Unlike Guy Kawasaki, who is an unconditional enthusiast of the platform, I am not going to only show you the bright side of G+, I will show you Google Plus as it is, with strengths and weaknesses.

Bad Things First

Google+ is not yet as mature as other social media platforms, but it has a lot of money behind it, and it learned the lessons of Facebook, My Space, and Twitter, and they are avoiding the mistakes of the competition.

Good Things Now

As you will notice, at the time of writing this page, there is no advertisement on Google Plus. This tells us that “Big G” doesn’t want to upset its thin base of users, so the ads will probably stay away for a while. We all know that their final objective is to make money, and what better way to make money than strategically placing a few ads on your feed? The temporary no ads policy could actually work in our favor, as writers, because strategically using the platform, we may use it to advertise our own pages.

The fact that the platform is still new, allows you to grow as an authority and get your followers base, and will serve you as one of the most effective marketing tools. To get your base of quality followers will be ten times harder in a few months. Google+ is growing fast.

If something is meant to go viral, it will go viral on this social media platform. Google’s platform is conceived to push viral content, and you can see how viral content gets shared, commented on, and +1ed.

When someone in your circles searches for content, Google will show them your content on the first page, whether your content is an article, a Squidoo lens, a Hubpages hub, or a Google+ post. Whatever you publish on Google+ on a given subject, will be presented on top of the results in our followers’ results. Do I need to convince you to get more people to circle you?

Many people see Google Plus as not only a social network platform, but as a recommendation engine. The plus ones are just votes up for content, and Google’s search engine treat these votes as a social trend signal.

The exponential growth of this social network says it all. G+ will has all the characteristics to become a major player on the market, and you can play a role in this too.

How To Use Google+ as a Brand Promotion Tool

Google+ is a decent platform for advertising your brand, or your content. It’s not the best one, and not the worst one. As of now, the content that is most viewed, voted on, and reshared, is viral content, whether it is breaking news, a cool picture, nude photos, viral videos, or beautiful landscape photos. The legitimate concern is probably taking over now, “Is this all that works on Google Plus?”, and “If so, then it’s not worth”. Do not jump to conclusions so fast, I will show you next why G+ works.

First of all, remember, your content is pushed to your followers, (people who have circled you), so you get the opportunity to gather some targeted audience, (more about this later).

Set Up the Authorship

Setting up the authorship gives search engines the confidence that can trace back a specific page to a real person. This allows Google to rate your content, and it will slightly bump it up in search results. To set up authorship you have to link from your pages to your Google+ profile and from your Google+ profile to your profile on the website your are writing to. The author ranking is Google’s next big thing. When you setup properly the authorship, you build your personal brand.

How To Get Followers

  • First of all add me to your circles, and plus1 this page, as a good Google+ user. My profile is here: Dorian Bodnariuc.
  • Go to Google+ Communities and join a few communities that are pertinent to your niche/niches. The community doesn’t have to be closely related, but you need to find the appropriate audience. I have a couple of examples, I write health articles, I joined Healthy Living community. Someone with a recipe niche will join a cooking community of the “food photography” community, and a recipe community.
  • Start adding people from the other communities you joined. The more people in your circles the better the exposure to your marketed content. Slowly build your base of quality and targeted followers and don’t try to cut corners, because this will cost you your reputation, and it won’t help you in the long run. When people start noticing your shares, they will reshare your content, and other people who liked your content will add you in circles.
  • Don’t just add people blindly without looking at their profile, and what are they posting. You will notice that some profiles have no posts, or they only have one post repeated 30 times. You don’t want to be associated with spammers.
  • Some communities are more active than others, when I started to look at the “Healthy Living” community, I realized that more than 75% of the members were not active, or spammers. The other 25% was almost inactive in terms of re-sharing. Make sure you selectively add to circles, otherwise you will end up with a stream full of junk, and with huge inactive circles.
  • When you look at the members’ list, you can determine easily who you circled and who you didn’t, by looking on the low-right corner of the profile’s box. If they are in your circles, you will see to little circles. See the picture above for exemplification.

How To Successfully Market your Content

Google+ is not a place where you go to just dump links and hope your content will be noticed. You have to genuinely engage with your audience, and care about them, this is the only way you will be perceived as an authority.

Here are a few guidelines for using this great platform:

  • Make your G+ content viral, whether you drop a link, or show a funny video. People ignore boring, common, and forgettable. Stand out.
  • There are a couple of cases where otherwise boring and forgettable gets noticed: if you are an authority, and I am talking here about big caliber authorities, or if you are writing to a niche, and have your circles created around that niche. What is boring for me is not for an enthusiast.
  • Do not overwhelm your audience with posts. Post only a few times per day. If you post 20 times in 10 minutes with insipid pictures, you will be muted by people who have you in circles.
  • Try to group your followers in circles, based on interests. This is not an easy task, but aim for this from the start, and it will pay off later.
  • Do not post only marketing material, or only posts that contain a link. Post useful, or funny things too. If you only drop links on your feed, you will lose engagement and followers. People are sick of spam, just don’t spam. Think about this as a “give”, and not as much as a “take” process. It is about what you give to your circles, and not what you are expecting from them.
  • When you re-share content, add your personal opinion about it, this will have two positive effects, will add value to the original content, making it more enticing for potential readers, and will increase you author ranking. Google rates authors based on many things, among which is the length of posts, the engagement on shares and reshares, and the number of pluses.
  • When you join a community, make sure you read the rules of any community you join. Don’t treat communities as your opportunity to dump links. Add value to the communities you join, and post a variety of content not just Squidoo lenses. This creates a bad reputation for you and for Squidoo, it is bad enough that Squidoo has been banned on Reddit for cheating.
  • If you absolutely need to post the same picture/link in more than one community, change your post so it is targeting that community, and do not just post the same thing. This would be perceived as spam, and Google doesn’t like spam, and it has many ways to find it.

How To Help Each Other

There is a misconception that we have to compete as small businesses if we are in the same niche. This conception is so wrong. Ever been to a farmers market? Don’t the farmers compete to sell their products? Yet every farmer is selling their produce. Even if we write on the same subject, we cater to different audiences, unless of special cases.

Enough with the divagation, now back to our main subject.
The social network work is huge and is tedious, and for one person to get enough traffic from social media means continuous work. It is hard to get your content distributed to enough people to make a difference. Let’s take my example, I am in about 10000 circles at the time of writing this. That means that when I post something publicly, it gets to 3000 people. In real life, depending on the niche and on followers, this could mean between 30 and 80 readers per article/news, and 20% to 50% more plus1. These views will be spread across two or three days. Too little, if you ask me. Now, the huge opportunity here is to have the post reshared. A reshared post has a new life of its own, it can reach another re-sharer with a big network, and and from that network to another big re-sharer. This what Google calls ripples. Now, what if in my circles I have 10 or 20 people with 10000 followers, and those people are following my posts religiously? Then my 30-80 readers per article become 300 to 800, and the best thing is that the growth is not linear, is exponential, because there are more chances to reach big re-sharers.

Google Plus Managing Made Easy

Use Circloscope Premium to manage users, add to circles, move between circles, semi-automatically add people in communities and hot posts. Here is the link: Circloscope.

This tool will save you a lot of time, and will make your daily chore of adding people in circles a breeze.

Circloscope also allows you to manage and scrub your circles, filter by how engaged are your followers, relevance, location, one way following, (people that didn’t add you back), inactivity, etc… If you don’t want to spend the money on Circloscope Premium, you can use the free version of Cricloscope, which has the same features as the full version, with the option to mass adding & removing of people stripped down. For any serious business that wants to make it on Google Plus Circloscope is a must.

Google+ Post Formatting

Stand Out with short-codes on Google+

How to format your text on Google+ posts to make it stand out and to make it more readable? As previously mentioned, on Google+ you need to draw the attention of your reader, and formatting can help you achieve that. Make subtitles, split text blocks into paragraphs, emphasize text in your Google posts. Bu how can you format your text on Google+, there is no editor? Here are the short-codes for Google+

*Bold* = Bold

_Italic_ = Italic

-Strike through- = Strike through (Not available on Squidoo formatting)

* _ bold italic _ * = bold italic

@ and + will insert a reference to another user in your post. When you type + and the first letters of the user’s name, you will be presented a list with users having that name. You then select the one you need. When you click on the reply button, on a comment, the +Reference is inserted automatically for you. The references are little mentions of your name on the platform. They add you credibility and author ranking.

# is used for tagging your posts, similarly to Twitter’s hashtags. They are very useful as they are a simple way to categorize content, even when the keywords are missing. Use hashtags in your posts, they are very helpful, but don’t abuse them.

How to Recover Deleted Pictures or Files – Data Recovery Tools and Techniques

Trashed hard driveHelp, I lost My Pictures!

If you lost or accidentally deleted your pictures and files, there are still great chances to recover them. As a computer geek, (I do this as a profession), I had to recover file many times. In the vast majority of time the files are recoverable, and in about 30 percent of the cases the retrieval is instant.

The key to a successful retrieval of your pictures and files is to act as soon as you discovered you lost the files, be it because an accidental deletion, or computer problems. I will explain this later in the document.

This tutorial is created for Windows computers, and it assumes you have a minimum knowledge of operating in a Windows Operating System. If you don’t know how to operate in a Windows environment, your best bet is to go to a local computer repair shop.

How To Recover Deleted Pictures or Files?

The Computer IS Fine, But My Files Are Gone

If the computer is fine and it doesn’t behave erratically, most likely you accidentally deleted your files. The first step in this case is to check in the Recycle Bin, but I bet you already did this. If you didn’t do it now. Look for pictures or maybe just a folder, If you accidentally deleted the whole folder, you won’t see the files or the pictures in the Recycle Bin, you will have to look for the folder that contains the files. This is particularly difficult if your Recycle Bin hasn’t been emptied in a while, and you have to search through thousands of files.

How to Recover Deleted Files from Recycle Bin – Advanced Tutorial

Sorting the Items In the Recycling Bin

If your Recycle Bin is empty, or you have few items, you can skip this.
To make it easier right click in the “Recycle Bin” folder and choose sort by “Date deleted”.
If the deletion was made long time ago this doesn’t make sense, and you would probably need to sort by type. Sort by type is not available by default on the Recycle bin, so you have to activate it. Right click in the Recycle Bin folder, select “Sort By”, and the choose “More”. Scroll down on the list and check the box for “Type”. Now the “Sort by type” is available from the contextual menu. When you sort by type all the folders are displayed grouped so it’s easier to find your pictures folder if it’s in the recycle bin.

Recover Deleted Pictures or Files Using “Previous Versions”
Recovering with Windows 7 Previous Versions
If your operating system is not Windows 7, you can skip this paragraph, this feature is only available on Windows 7.
If your files are located on the System drive, usually the C: drive, “Previous Version” is enabled by default. “Previous Version” it’s a feature that allows the system to store on a hidden portion of the drive, files and system settings. The files are automatically copied on the hidden folder, and stored for a limited numbers of days. When a file is modified, or deleted, the old version is stored automatically. Let’s say you deleted some pictures in the “Pictures” folder. Go to “My Computer” => C: => Users => USERNAME . Search for the “My Pictures” folder and right click on the folder. From the contextual menu select “Restore Previous Versions”. A list with snapshots of the folder will be presented. Select a previous version that you think contains the deleted files. If you accidentally deleted the files today at 11:00 AM, any snapshot previous to this date and time would contain the deleted files. Neat huh? The trick here is to act as soon as you deleted the files. The longer you wait the bigger the chances to get the good snapshot deleted are. The snapshots are deleted on a regular basis by the system, so if you wait too long, the files will be deleted.

Lexar Media IR437 Image Rescue Software (Retail Package)

Recover your lost or deleted files with this easy to use software. The software will scan raw data on you memory card, and it will find your lost pictures.
Lexar Image Rescue has an intuitive and easy to use interface, and will scan the mass storage device, (sd cards, USB drives), for deleted image files or after reformatting your SD card. Additionally, the newest version of the software, can recover, not only image files, but many other popular document types.

This is probably one of the easiest, and most effective image recovery software.

Data Recovery Tools

Recovering Deleted Files with Data Recovery Tools

If the two methods described above didn’t work for you, that means the data has been erased from the disk. The good news is that operating systems do not really delete the files when you delete them, the OS only deletes the record from the index, so from the OS’s perspective the file doesn’t exist anymore. This is where the data recovery software comes in handy. The data recovery software scans the drive for possible files that are deleted from the index, and reassembles them for you.

As with any other recovery method the key is to act as soon as possible. The more you use your drive after the deletion, the less chances you have for a full recovery. This happens because Windows treats the portion occupied by your lost files as empty, and will start to write new data over your deleted files. The more you use the drive the more deleted data is overwritten.

The data recovery software is usually an intuitive program that can be installed on the computer, or can generate a bootable media. The purpose of the bootable media is to avoid the use of the hard drive, to maximize the chances of a full recovery, or sometimes provide an environment for un-bootable systems.
The process of recovering data with tools is very easy, and it is somewhat similar for all software, but not all data recovery programs are the same. The scanning algorithm, the reading approach are things that can make or break a recovery utility.

A few general rules for all recovery software:
To avoid further data corruption, mount the corrupted drive on another intact system. You can do this in a couple of ways:
Install the software on a separate system and attach the drive with a USB enclosure or adapter.
Create the recovery media on another computer and boot the computer with the bad drive from the bootable recovery media
Only start doing the job when you have enough time to dedicate. If you start and stop, and then start again you risk to lose more data.

How Can I Recover My Pictures After Formatting the SD Card

Pictures Recovery after Deletion or Formatting with Recovery Software

If you accidentally deleted your photos on the SD card there is no Recycle Bin for the SD card, so there is no easy way to recover them. Also it happens quite often to format your SD card and to realize that you didn’t save the pictures yet. What do we do in cases like this?
Fortunately, there is software that makes the recovery for cases like this a breeze. One of the easiest to use programs is “Sandisk RescuePro Recovery Software”.

Sandisk RescuePro Recovery Software, V3.3 Disk

It works on and card not just on Sandisk cards. It is really easy to use, and in most of the cases it is able to recover your pictures. One thing about this is that you need to wait the code for the software for a few days, but is worth. The software is actually an annual subscription, but it is very affordable.

Remember, if you deleted the pics on your card, or formatted the card, you need to stop using it immediately to insure a good recovery rate.

Recover Files from A Defective Computer

How To Recover Pictures and Files from A Defective Computer

Your computer might be defective and it won’t start. What to do in this case? First you need to assess the state of the computer and why the computer won’t start. Depending on this, you might be able to recover your files or not. In the next paragraphs I will give you tips to know what is wrong with your computer, and what to for each case.

  • If your computer boots and you can get on your Windows account, then probably the files were accidentally deleted.
  • If your computer passes the initial boot sequence but stops when loading Windows, it is the operating system that is corrupted. A re-installation could fix it, or a boot rescue CD could also fix the OS. Sometimes this could be due to bad computer RAM memory.
  • If your computer doesn’t pass the initial black screen booting sequence, something more serious could have happened, such as a defective hdd, or some other hardware problem.
  • If the computer doesn’t do anything, it is also a hardware problem. You can tackle this with a local computer shop, or proceed to moving your drive on another computer.
  • If the computer starts but it doesn’t recognizes your hard-drive, then you cannot rescue your files anymore. Actually there are data recovery services, that will disassemble your drive, and will read the data on the platters with special equipment. These are special services and are very expensive. Most of us prefer to lose the family pictures than to pay for these services.

What To Do If The Computer Won’t Boot

My Computer Won’t Boot, I Need My Pictures And Files

There are many reasons why your computer won’t boot. If you think your computer is not worth investing too much work to revive it, then the easiest way to recover your files is to take out the old hard-drive, mount it on a USB enclosure, and read it through USB on a good computer. You will be able to read your old files without any problems. This method assumes your hard-drive is not defective. For the case that Windows won’t boot because of a file-system corruption, or other Windows corruption problems, there is the Recovery Boot Disk that will allow you to boot your computer and fix a wide range of problems.

If the hard disk is the one that caused your computer to not boot, you still have good chances to recover your files, but in many cases you need a data recovery software like Data Rescue PC 3, to scan for files on the corrupted disk.

If the computer warns you before booting that there is a problem with the disk drive, you need to stop immediately using the drive if you want to maximize your chances of recovering the data. If your drive is making clicking noises, you also need to stop using it. Sometimes a hard-disk will have just enough life for a last run, so after recovery it will die.
The next step is to acquire data recovery software and install it on a good computer, and buy a USB enclosure and use it to mount the drive from the defective computer. Now connect the hard-drive to recover on the good computer and start the recovery.

Data Loss Prevention

What can I do to prevent data corruption or data loss?

  • Enable in BIOS and on the hard-drive S.M.A.R.T. This is a software utility embedded on the hard-drive that will detect when too many error corrections are occurring. Whenever this happens it means that you drive is near an imminent failure and you should backup/replace it.
  • If a message of a hard drive error appears, stop using your computer until you change the drive. You can use the computer to make a backup of your data onto another drive.
  • Check old backup tapes and copy them onto new tapes, using a temporary restore. This should happen each 10 years or more.
  • Check the data stored on CD’s and DVD’s, and recopy that media regularly. Not all CD and DVD media are equal. The factory-recorded media is the longest lasting. The media burned at home or on a computer CD-ROM unit can last between 1 to 10 years or more. So it is wise to rerecord it after a few years if you bought good quality media, or after one year if it’s on cheap media.
  • Buy an antivirus and keep it up to date.
