If you are a Domain Name owner and make business on Internet you know that your Domain Name is one of your biggest assets.
You wouldn’t give away any traffic resulted in misspelling of your domain name or traffic generated by similar domain names. There are actually people on Internet who specialize in stealing traffic from other companies. They do this by using domain names similar to successful companies.
If someone would try to register your domain name somewhere else in the world using one of the numerous existing TLD’s, (top level domain names), what would be your reaction? Your first reaction, of course, would be to protect your domain name. You would like to buy that domain so nobody else could use it and steal traffic from you.
This is a natural reaction; you are trying to protect your asset.
This weakness is exploited by a large number of companies specialized in this type of scam.
How does the Domain Name Scam work?
The spammer collects information from the Domain Name registration which is, in most of the cases, public. This information contains the owner name, the email address, and of course the Domain Name. This information is the base of an email sent to the CEO. The email informs the owner that another company is trying to register the domain name in cause but for another TLD. As the owner of the domain you get the benefit of being announced of this purchase and being offered to buy it yourself. For instance I own head-massage.net and someone is trying to register head-massage.tw and head-massage.cn, etc… Other country-specific flavors (.asia, .biz, .cc, .cn, .com. cn., .hk, etc.) can be mentioned. I am informed about this and offered to buy the domain or the domains. The email is devised in such way that you will immediately want to protect what’s yours no matter what.
At this point there are a few possible scenarios for someone like me:
First scenario: I fall for the scam and say yes please register all of these domains for me. This is the worst case. These types of companies are ghost companies that charge you three to ten times the regular price of the domain. Sometimes if you miss any details of the registration they will register themselves as technical and administrative contacts and they will keep themselves in the loop trying to reap you off more down the road.
Second scenario: I look at the domain names I pick the ones I am interested to protect and register them at a serious registrar for a fair price.
Third scenario: I simply ignore the email; I don’t care if someone registers the domain head-massage.cn, these days a domain name doesn’t count that much for the traffic as it used to. The content is king and traffic leaking is almost impossible only using a domain name. Protecting your Trademark is your lawyer’s job and there is no need to buy everything on the market to protect your Trademark. An example of a Domain Name Spam email
These emails are personalized to the owner/manager of a commercial Internet brand and insinuates that the brand is at risk due to a third party application being made for the respective trademark name. The nice foreign domain registrar they are will ask you if you want to secure all of the variants of your Domain Name so that you can protect your Internet brand.
Most of these SPAMS have Chinese senders. The email content is changing becoming more and more persuasive and subtle.
If you received one of these spams, paste a copy of the email in the comments. I also work as a SYS-Admin for a company with an important Domain Names portfolio and we get quite a lot of these.

After our initial checking,we found the internet brand name and these domain names being applied are as same as your company’s, so we need to get the confirmation from your company.If the aforesaid company is your business partner or your subsidiary company, please DO NOT reply us,we will approve the application automatically.If you have no any relationship with this company,please contact us within 10 workdays. The funny thing is that you can buy any of the suggested names somewhere else. As bad as they look sometimes I found them useful as they provide the Marketing team with ideas for new domain names. (I administrate a large domain names portfolio and I get a lot of these emails.)
Of course I bought them somewhere else, (I deal a lot with GoDaddy.com, they have great prices and discounts.),
I actually bought quite a few names at their “suggestion”.
Don’t try to buy a domain through these SPAMMERS they’ll reap you off. I have a friend who launched into a discussion whith one of these companies just for fun. He won’t post his discussions, he says there is to much stuff to be edited.

There is probably no company “Gerrnd International, Inc”. Or if there is one they certainly don’t want to buy those domains.
This is just a trick to make you answer. After you answer antl.hk will make sure that you are explained the potantial trademark issues and traffic problems.
If you have a Marketing budget and plan to expand in the East you can always buy any domain somewhere else.
You can always answer these guys there is no harm, but make sure you use a temporary email account that you can get rid of any time, and compare their offer, (they will offer you to buy those domains), to another registrar.
I am diyng to see a complete follow up, (up to the point of quotation), so if someone gets there, come back and post them. I get a lot of these were I work, but I can’t answer just for fun, it wouyld be against internal policies.

This has already happened with another company recently so I’m surprised that it is still available as we said that we held no interest in the use of any other domain using acoceania.
We hold the domain for acoceania.com.au and will maintain this as we currently do now.
Earnfar International has no association with us but we have no reason to stop them from registering domain names other than acoceania.com.au

This is a scam that has been going on for years. I’ve written about this issue on my blog at learnthenet.org/2010/05/10/the-domain-game/ and many others have shared similar experiences along with sample emails.

It is very interesting how persistent they can be. After you clearly expressed your position declining any domain name purchase they would just not stop, trying to scam you.
They can be really annoying.

The persitiency was what I was impressed with. Right from the begining I politely declined and made reference to the scam, yet the guy kept trying to con me.
I just hope that people look to the net for sites like this whenever they feel smething is dodgy before they get scammed.

I received the same email from a “Tom” today from ANTL.hk stating that FWOQW International was trying to register my internet brand and sent this reply:
Dear Tom,
I will be travelling to Hong Kong on Friday morning on other business. We are in the process of negotiating a JV in Hong Kong
I am very interested to protect my internet brand as we have already made a substantial investment in web based business. US$ 148 a year would be a small price to pay to protect our investment.
Would you be available to meet me at my hotel (Mandarin Oriental) to discuss further? Alternatively we could come to your office at a time convenient to you.
I will be accompanied by my lawyer as well as his brother who is from the Hong Kong police department (investigative division). My lawyer has forwarded your various emails to his brother. In addition to registering with you they feel that FWOQW International could possibly be involved in fraudulent activities. There will be no need to reveal private information about FWOQW unless you are comfortable. They would however very much like to meet you.
As I know time is short I shall of course be prepared to fill out the necessary documents in your presence. Do you accept cash or would a check be OK? I want to get my internet brand protected as soon as possible and I am worried if giving you a check would delay matters so perhaps cash is better? I would of course need a receipt to document our transaction.
